Research

I am a scholar of nineteenth- and twentieth-century English literature.

After graduating from Doshisha University (2014), I completed my MPhil in Modern and Contemporary Literature (2015) and PhD in English Literature (2019) at the University of Cambridge. My doctoral thesis, “Ghostly Sounds and Questions of Belief in Thomas Hardy and Walter de la Mare,” drew on my findings from unpublished manuscripts across nine archives in the UK and the US to recover a relationship that had been lost to literary history.

My interests include poetics; the intersections between literature and science, religion, and philosophy; writers’ notebooks; and sound studies. Besides Hardy and de la Mare, I have published on such writers as Virginia Woolf, Elizabeth Bowen, and Henry James.

With Angela Leighton and Anna Nickerson, I co-edited Walter de la Mare: Critical Appraisals (Liverpool University Press, 2022), Liverpool English Texts and Studies, Volume 95. This is the first comprehensive study of his work, literary connections, and legacies. While it builds on an international conference we organized at the University of Cambridge in 2018, it is full of specially commissioned essays and poems to appeal to students, academics, and general readers alike.
